Address Shortener Idea

Could feathercoin implement an address shortener into the protocol on an as needed basis? The idea is to keep a record of addresses linked to shorter codes in the blockchain. They could be a minimum number of decimal digits, say 7 like phone numbers, and when those get used 1 more digit could be added. They could last a long time because they would only be allocated as needed. As the blockchain is scanned, the client would build a list of shortened addresses. They would only have to be recorded the first time they were used, after that they would be permanent. What do you think?
