Mining noob question
-
Is cgminer the best software for mining or are there alternatives?
Thx alot

There are alternatives but if you are gpu mining (or ASIC for SHA coins) then IMHO cgminer is the only way to go.
Having said that, some have reported faster rates with guiminer-scrypt so it may be worth giving it a go. Whilst guiminer uses cgminer under the hood, I believe it’s an older version (2.x). So it may just be worth download the naked cgminer 2.x.
Do think that the “extra hash power” reported will be gained again with linux and cgminer (building from source apparently increase hashrate up to 10%).
Will update my build thread with guide/comparison on the cgminer prebuilt/built. within a couple of days.I swear to cgminer, its so versatile and stable (if your not pushing the boundaries). Also easy to maintain on headless units.

Another alternative miner is bfgminer.
I use it on Linux and Win.
It’s also on GIT: https://github.com/luke-jr/bfgminer.

Thx, any cpu miners available?

I use Scrypt miner GUI for CPU mining.
I would have to swear by guiminer, I get better hash rates than cgminer on my 7950’s.

Scrypt miner GUI is best choice for noob.
GUI (graphic user interface = nice window, no command line :) ) -
CGminer works great for me
