Following the Bitcoin London Conference
-
Friends,
So Ruthie and I had a very productive day at the London Bitcoin Conference yesterday. We met tons of people, developers, investors, entrepreneurs, Max Keiser, BBC and the genius Lamassu http://lamassubtc.com
I managed to ask a few questions about Feathercoin and a number of people expressed an interest. We even had a few fans approach us with some enthusiasm. We also had some critics, most of whom I was able to persuade. The one big question we get is the existential “How are you different?”. At the moment I take this in two ways
- It tells me something about the questioner, maybe they are unsure of what they are for
- We still need to make the case to the more rational skeptics, especially those who could help us in the future.
Style is substance
I would like your feedback on this. Knowing how to look good and communicate is a form of innovation in itself because it requires both understanding the underlying tech and the needs and fears of the community that it helps. We bring technology to the people to create something very powerful. It’s not about being first, it’s about being right, it’s about understanding the nature of the landscape ahead of those around you.
I have talked at length on the distinction between technical innovation and value innovation, at the moment the crypto world is full of early adopters who love disruptive technology. But look at how ASICs and centralisation have ruined BTC recently. They have become too protective and they don’t want to share, they just want to get rich.
In fact one of our fans Vytautas from Lithuania said: “Feathercoin is not about profit, it’s about the idea.” It’s an ambitious project and I think it’s this ambition that scares people, there’s something about us that scares them.
Can any one on the dev team speak to me at some point about the roadmap for keeping Feathercoin decentralised and ASIC resistant? I would also like to know if we plan to leapfrog Litecoin as right now the only thing propping the price up is the Gox speculation.
Can’t wait for the 20th.

Some great thoughts in there Chrisj.
You asked some important questions.
Personally good communication for me is about making sure your target audience understands your message. It means pulling out all the vernacular as you give the message, listening to them respond and then giving exact feedback on their response.
A 3 step process, EXPLAIN - LISTEN - FEEDBACK then repeat parts 2 and 3.
As for an effective message, passion and knowing the message inside out and back to front is everything.
Have you tried getting friends and family to fire stupid, difficult and insane questions at you… and respond under pressure but coherently and on topic?
I’ve been trying to explain crypto-currencies and the value of FTC over other coins to all sorts of folk over the last 2 weeks. I find it hard, but am reaching a point where my arguments are kinda fluid now.
I would have found going to London and doing that scary. So well done and keep up the good work.
Good post Chris, well done for bringing this up in the open, I will admit it was scary when asked a question as we were stuck for an answer, but I think we were recieved well and people want to know more about us, we just need to work on getting the right message across.
