Expected Mining Returns on My Hardware
-
I’d like to give FeatherCoin Mining a try with my Desktop which has been serving me well for 3.5 years now. Featured below are the Specs :
Microprocessor : Core2Duo 2.8 GHz
Mother Board : ASUS P5KPL AMPS
RAM : Umax 3 GB DDR2
Graphics Card : ASUS 8400 512 MB
OS : UBUNTU 10.04 The Lucid Lynx
I hope to use this Desktop for another couple of years. Been working fine except the PSU dying a couple of times. Have taken a look at a few Online Mining Calculators. Would be great if a member could speculate on the number of FeatherCoins I can hope to mine with this Hardware Solo/Pool.
Not very efficient technically. I know there are lots of variables, just require a helping hand. I’d also like to know the bandwidth consumed while Mining FC’s. I have a 11 GB Internet connection and can spare about 4 GB per month. Any additional info welcome :)

As MrFeathers has said, unfortunately your rig is not really suited to mining. You would be looking at around 1p per day (UK) or 1.5c per day (US).
If you are looking to mine, AMD cards are the way to go. The different card architectures mean that AMD cards can work out the complex calculations needed to mine in roughly a quarter of the time (very loose approximation depending on the cards compared) it takes the equivalent nVidia card.
Now, for gaming… nVidia FTW! ;)

Thanx a lot for the replies MrFeathers and Nutnut. I am aware that AMD cards are better for Mining Crypto-Currencies. Did read Mr. Bushnell’s recent interview in the Guardian - http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jun/25/bitcoin-successors-litecoin-freicoin
ATI 7870 and ATI 7950 would be too high an investment for me right now. Indian Rupees 16,000 and 25,000 right now. ATI 6450 and 6670 seem safer bets. INR 3587 and 5381 right now. US $ 1 = 60.70 INR right now. I hope these cards are compatible with the Mother Board and the Microprocessor.
Off to a short break and will return to the forum in a couple of weeks to start my Mining adevnture. Thanx again.
If you were to pick one, I would choose the 7950.
I don’t want to discourage you, but the electricity cost and wear on your machine just isn’t worth it for the returns you would get. Your machine is fine for an every day usable computer, but for mining it’s just not a good choice.
See if you can get the 7950 secondhand.
