What is the advantage of using a stratum pool server?

Is there any advantage to use a stratum from a pool?
My Rigg has an active NTP connection to 3 stratum 2 server itself. This should provide an exact time stamp for shares.
Confusing i know but it’s not the Stratum time service.
In the simplest terms, the stratum protocol is an efficient way of letting your mining client know that there is a new block on the network so that you don’t mine an orphaned block. I ran some tests and without stratum i was at one point, 3 blocks behind the current block. Had i of found a new block in that minute or so, it would have been orphaned.
You can loose 10% or more shares without stratum whereas with it it’s more like 0.1% with it.
You don’t set your NTP service to use pool stratum, you simply point a stratum capable miner (cgminer for example) to a stratum pool and you should see something like…
Connected to ftc.nut2pool.com diff 64 with stratum as user nutnut.1
Ok, thanks for the explanation.
I simply didn’t know, that the term stratum has a different meaning than in the NTP context.
Will use stratum protocol then. :)
