PSU Repair/Replace
-
Hi guys, I ran into some trouble with my PSU fan last week, here is what happened.
It might help someone else that suddenly have problems with their rig shutting down
for no obvious reason.Troubleshoot
Last week my rig would shut down after 20 mins, this went on for half a day until I had time to go have a look at the rig. After looking over the hardware and getting ready to check the software I noticed that the PSU fan sounded weird, I had a closer look and yeap that was problem, it was dying, half rotating and stopping and starting, although doing so very quietly, so the PSU was overheating and shutting the whole rig down.Repair the Fan
Now when this happens don’t go out and buy another expensive PSU, see if you can repair the fan first. Unscrew the fan from the PSU, or you may even have to take the psu apart, normally a few tiny screws hold it together, the fan should be connected in the inside with a connector. I gave my fan a clean and little grease, it worked for 10 mins then stopped, so onto plan B.Replace the Fan
Next thing I did was replace the fan with a similar size and RPM, this cost about 65 FTC, the connector didn’t match so I connected the fan to a 4 pin molex outside the PSU. This worked.
Its being running on full power for a week and its perfect.Backup/replace my current PSU
My last option was the replace the PSU or maybe even have a another PSU ready to swap in.
The best rated PSU I seen on the forums here is the Seasonic PSUs, the 1250watt used by Nutnut.

He can correct me if I’m wrong but they pull 1450watts for him even though there rated for 1250watts. So I will have to get a Seasonic PSU as I no longer trust the PSU I use.Notes:
I’m using a Thermaltake Toughpower 1500watt, had no problems until the fan went dead.
The fan lasted only about 6000 hours on full (8 months).
I could have got a return but that could have taken weeks, and you still have the same shitty PSU.
I probably wouldn’t mess about with a PSU if the rig wasn’t out in the shed, (fire hazard). -
seasonic PSUs are hard to beat. i’ve got a 500 watt around here that’s still going strong after 7 or so years.
+1 on the do it yourself approach, but you forgot the pics… ::)

Your damn right deroekeloze about the pics.
I may be swaping out the fan for a higher RPM fan this week, so I can take a few snaps then.
