Planning my first real mining machine
-
Hi all,
For now I’m playing around with cpu mining but I want to start mining with a gpu or two later. Of course I want to keep the cost down, so what would you recommend for a lower price yet still decent gpu? I’ll buy one first then the next one later. So knowing that how much power will I need for this sort of budget setup? Maybe 750w?
Thanks,

here’s some links to what others have built. i had to wade through a lot of posts to find them. maybe we could get some of the rig stats posts stickied? *hint hint* :P

Bit tricky really as it depends if you want to scale it right up or stick with 1 or 2 cards but here s a quick brain dump.
Video cards - We’ll start with the cards. IMHO there’s no contest 7950s (or i prefer 7970s but most will say they’re not as cost effective as 7950s). You cant really go wrong with either. I prefer Gigabyte cards and some prefer the sapphires. Again you won’t go wrong with either.
Motherboards - My fave is the gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3. I bought one, it worked a treat so i bought 4 more. Never had a reason to change so there may be other good boards too.
CPU, i went for FX 4100 so i can repurpose later but you will not need that much power for mining. A sempron would do fine.
RAM - 4GB of anything.
HDD - Anything. I use SSDs just because i can but spinners will work too.
PSU - Personally, if you’re gonna seriously mine and possibly reach 4 cards, It HAS to be the Seasonic x1250. EPIC power supply. If you are ethinking you’ll stick to 1 or 2 cards then a 750-800w high quality PSU is a must. People seem to cut corners with the psu but if you are running it at near max output 24/7 you will kill a cheap supply in no time. You also need to find a SINGLE RAIL supply. I cant stress this enough. Many people on this forum have been sucked in by 1200 or even 1500 watt PSUs that are multi rail and cant run 4 cards. Buy cheap, buy twice.
Finally, the case - none. Simples. If you are going to mine more than 1 card, open air is the best way to go.

What are you looking to hit for KH/s? What do you currently have for hardware? Is this going to be a dedicated miner or do you want to use it as well?

The thread I started for my build may be filled with useful information, ordering, pitfalls, research, etc. that would be helpful.
Prices will be already outdated, though, even a month since.

Thanks so much all!

The msi twin frozr iii 7950 cards are the most power efficient but be prepared to bring some arctic silver to the table and tear off the heatsink.

I have 3 cards and that one was the worst. It’s a sad state of affairs when you rely on 12 year old girls to work in a electronics factory in china doing the work skilled laborers are supposed to do. But I suppose we’d pay five times as much for every finished product after wall street got their cut. I had to void the warranty on all three of my cards to fix the problem they created and I will hire a lawyer if I have to send them back for repairs. I have a photograph of the proof of negligence.
I had an incredible retort to this, but with every go-over in my head with it, I have to say it is probably the worst thing I’ve ever said. Ever. It is Hitler-bad. Going for it anyway:
Actually, large glops of thermal paste are the signature of the 90 year olds in the free trade zones. The younger generation will put too little thermal paste rather than too much because when they check their levels at the end of the 14 hour shift, if they come up short they don’t want to get thoroughly searchedifyouknowwhatimean. The elderly instead take it as an opportunity to flop dangly wrinklies around at their site manager to dare them to search for smuggled out thermal paste.
And there we go. A tasteless observation of our shitty economic state of affairs. Could any of you direct me to the ticket booth of the tram ride to Hell? Do they accept FTC?
“One, please.”

I’ll leave on same train. At least we’ll have something to talk about on the way down.
