[/quote]That’s what I think… I was just looking at the hardware comparison, wondering whether or not to go for 7970’s in my next build. I have picked these 5970’s up of eBay for around £120 each. I think they are great cards. I have just tweaked the conf file a little more and am now getting 2.270 in total. Not bad I think.

With 2 cards and my i7 CPU it was drawing just shy of 730Watts. I think with the extra card it will somewhere in the region of 1KW.

In my country a gigabyte 7970 oc (gives perfect 750khash) cost 505$ brand new and with 2years warranty.
my 7970 rig uses 1400w on ac side (1120w on dc side), which means each cards use about 250w (DC).I cant find any 5970 for under 300$ on ebay +shipping (which deliver to my country).
So on my eyes given the resale value, price difference and waranty i will stick to buying new 7970´s=)
However sweet looking rig Rob! :D

[/quote]Kind of… I already had a 40a breaker (240v) running up to my summer house on 10mm SWA. Currently at about 26amp.

[/quote]700KH/s per card at 750MHz core / 3600MHz memory. You cannot buy them new unlike HD7970.

[/quote]I am getting in the region of 755KH/s per card running 1100 mem clock, and 810 core clock, and intensity 19. Im really happy with 5970’s. as I said previously I paid £130 for one card and £250 for the other 2, on ebay. Just keeping my eyes open for a 4th now :).

[/quote]I don’t think overclocking is worth these extra 55KH/s. I prefer to run them downvolted.
HD6000 series isn’t slower. It is clocked higher and delivers better performance per MHz compared to HD5000 series. Unlocked HD6950 are my favourites. 480KH/s at 900MHz core / 5200MHz memory. HD6990 delivers 900KH/s with ease.

5970 is a dual GPU card. to compare generations youd have to put 5970 against 7990 (dual 7970 gpu). and then you’ll se the difference=)
Also when the 6xxx gen came out it was the start of lower power usage from gpus (correct me if im wrong). So 5xxx fast/powerhungry, 6xxx mediocre/notthatpowerhungry, 7xxx fast/notthatpowerhungry.
Cant wait for the 8xxx gen to see what it will bring to the table. in the meantime i ordered me another 7990 card! -
