It's gone pop!
-
hope it didnt kill the card.
and yeah theres a reason i scream dont skimp on psu,
and buy seasonic!ive been in your scenario before. and its no fun
-
only informatio i can find on the psu now:
High efficency 880w Power supply• Supports the latest specifications of ATX12V & EPS12V• Supports systems with multi-core CPU and GPU technologies• High efficiency = better power consumption and less heat generated• Compliance with Energy Star withtriple/quad 12v rail. cant they decide? and how much is each rail able to deliver?
if its quad on 880w that means 220w pr rail… now if one rail has two pcie contact and you
use both of those on the same rail you really are in trouble.would stay clear of noname psus…

For those of you that gave warning in my original post about tuning and performance. It’s gone bang >:(
I checked the web interface about 3hrs ago and everything was looking good… Then I’ve just tried to connect again now and there was no response from the rig. So went to have a look and she’s sitting there in a room full of the familiar smell of burnt out electronics :'(
The smell is defiantly from the PSU, but as to if it has caused any other damage when it went pop or not yet remains to be seen.
I was running a G7 Power Extreme 880W with a single GV-R797TO-3GD and it was pulling 430-470W at the wall, so don’t really see how I can have blown it up due to overloading but maybe I have.
I’ll keep you posted as I found out more
UM
yea :( besides the cards i spend quite a bit on mobo and psu. i run seasonics and some evga 1500 watt ones. crossing fingers but never had an issue yet.
-
Feel sorry for you man :(
-
Ah sorry to hear that mate :/
Im running my 7950 at i-20, anyone think I should knock it down?
Your memory speed is a little high for my liking.
-
So sorry to hear that :'(.
Do tell us if your card survived or not, and just curious, what configuration was the card running on when it happened ?
-
Check your surface mount capacitors on the back of the card (by the silver bar on the rear). You may well find that they are burnt silly.
Will say it again. Dodgy PSUs do not run 24/7 at high load. They WILL blow and possibly take out the rest of your components… Scrimping on a psu is a false economy.
I bought a plug adapter - which gives the wattage being used. The Hall effect transducer from the power company also worked (around one wire to the rig (or plug board)).
Fine tune your rig to “accepts” as well, not just hash rate. You can often turn down the intensity but get less rejects and higher hash rate. You can then turn the Engine / clock speed down and still get the same Hash, but use less power. Press G in CGMiner to see the GPU control menu options.
I always turn the down the fan temperature triggers levels and check (A) automatic fan is set, (E)engine and fan settings are not always saved with (S) then (W) (write config).
Hope you Rep + the members who gave the best advice ;)

…The Hall effect transducer …
Woah. For a second there I was 18 and back in college holding my thumb out in front of me to see which way the magnetic field was going to rotate. Those were the good old days…
Could do with a volenteer to do a mining Mode of failure analysis -> [FAQ] ? I was tempted to put this in but in the end, I would like to keep the support FMA for the feathercoind/Qt client bugs / tips.

Thanks for all the words of wisdom and support guys :)
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, been a bit busy and been running around trying to get my 4 day old PSU swapped out!
So the PSU that went pop had the spec as per svennand’s reply, what you can’t get from the net and is only on the box is that it is a +12v quad rail, but what they don’t tell you is how that is split up and what connectors are on what rails.
They then give you a nice little table showing that each +12V rail can support 19A with a total of 696W giving you 174W per +12V rail ?? not sure the maths add up here maybe someone can help me out.
So given that I have no idea what connects are on which rail, and the max draw of 174W per rail, I’m guessing what has happened is that I have overloaded one of the rails by doing exactly what svennand said. (rep left)
@mattmct, what memory speed are you running at the moment? and what performance are you getting
@TheRedViper, my current config is in here
@Nutnut Everything on the GPU looks good, so I have my fingers crossed for that
@ wrapper0feahter, I have an at the wall meter that was clocking around the 420-470w mark at the time of the problem, don’t have a power company device, but might do next week as thinking of changing supplier to lower my kWh price later today.
I have managed today to get the dead supply swapped and upgraded to a Corsair CX750M for now, I know its only 750W not the 880W I had but as this seams to be single rail I might stand a better chance, I’m only running this config for a short while whilst I wait for some extra cards to turn up and the Seasonic X-Series 1250w ‘80 Plus Gold’ to come back in to stock as I’m head towards my 4 card rig.
As for did any of it survive I’m sorry don’t have an answer just yet, in the middle of some real work and can’t test at the moment, but I’ll update you as soon as I get home
Cheers again guys

Must have my lucky pants on today ;D
Just plugged everything back in, and fired her up… mining within moments of boot at 715Kh/s I must admit I have dropped intensity to 19 for now, whilst I keep an eye on current draw etc…
But apart from a blown up PSU and a little dent in the pride, I’ve come out of this not to bad :)
Thanks again to all those offering advice and support, rep left as required.
Off to work on monitoring setup now

Single rail FTW. +1 rep to you sir. Great to hear it’s working again.
-
Glad to hear it survived!
I have the CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 750W similar to yours but higher up the chain, been on 247 for 3 weeks now so far so good. Wanted the 850W but the 750W was at a price I couldn’t resist, I’ll upgrade if I add more cards.
I’m currently running 2x 7950. getting 0.65 Mh/s from each, 1100 Mhz core, 1150 Mhz memory. intensity 20. I plan to tune more, but running well so far. About 2.5% rejects, depends on pool, sometimes 1.5%.
Many thanks wrapper0feather,+1 rep given ;)
My rejects are pretty low 1%-2.5% max, seems to depends on the pool. I’ll have to go get one of those monitors as I don’t have one here. Fans are set to auto, limited to 40-85, they seem to run at 50-60% normally. I’m going to have to play with the intensity settings.
I’m using BAMT so not too sure how to see the hardware error or access those settings. Unless I run from command I assume?
-
To see the numbers,
Get a console running either on the BAMT box or via SSH client its up to you.
Once logged in type the following
sudo su

screen -ls
after this you will get something like the below returned
There is a screen on:
5261.cgminer (12/11/2013 06:28:53 PM) (Detached)
1 Socket in /var/run/screen/S-root.
to see whats going on type
screen -r 5261.cgminer
The 4 number before the . changes every time cgminer starts, so you need to re-run the -ls command to find the answer if you re-start cgminer.
and to drop out of screen,
CTRL+a, d
Enjoy ;)
