So I'm in the market for a few R9 280X
-
Which company is the best one to buy?
I’m looking at the windforce Gigabyte version, but would like some input on which card is better.
-
I have the Sapphire R9 280x Dual X OC, the non boost version and im getting around 715-720 kh undervolting. Of course I can get higher kh but then power draw would be higher so im happy at this efficiency. im running 3 so far and if its stable looking to get a couple more. In europe they are selling for about 250 euros.

asus matrix platinum 280X
they are the most expencive but well worth it!
you can actually achive 760khash with “silent” operation
if you just spec the psu high enough and have good spacing between cards -
Depend on how much you can get the cards and if they are in short demand or not, each card with some minor tweak will push minimum 710kh + just depend on power consumption afterwards. I know for example the Sapphire Dual X OC compared to the Dual X OC is much harder to find but I had some luck in Paris :D
wow that thing was cool!
i recommend at least 7cm space between card (closer and you get heat pockets)
if your able to go bigger distance you would not need external fan to remove air between cards -
I think that thing has like 10CM per card.
Either way, I’m going to put it on my balcony, where there’s decent airflow year round(though summer ambient temps climb to the high 30s).
While we’re there, what’s the impact of humid air on GPUs?
You aren’t worried about the weather at all? The humidity alone may be enough to fry the cards and mobo plus any bad weather you may have. I certainly wouldn’t take the risk if I were you.

I’m developing my oil and water cooled mine… ;D
With that same provision, but reversed… ;)
with mining time is everything. i ordered two of these and i got an email saying
Hello!
First off, I’d like to thank you for your recent OpenRigs order. We had some hiccups with BitPay not being able to handle the load of Bitcoin payments we (and other merchants) received, but all in we had a pretty remarkable opening week! In fact, we sold WAY, WAY beyond what we expected, by a very large order of magnitude.
In order to meet the increased demand, we have roped in a second fabrication team. We have gone into injection-moulding-overdrive since Monday morning, and have placed the largest order for extruded aluminium with our steel supplier that they’ve ever seen from us. We ordered nearly 5km of aluminium! We’ve also rush-ordered more of our custom packing boxes and packing material, as well as a metric ton of motherboard risers and thumb screws.
For some of you that ordered really early (order numbers under 450) we will be able to finalise your orders and ship them out by Friday. If you have an order number higher than 450, please bear with us - fabrication will be nearly complete on all the orders by the beginning of next week, but we are going to have a slight delay on the packing boxes being produced and the risers/thumb screws arriving from our supplier (of all things). The rest of the fabrication will be done quickly, so it’s just a few aspects outside of our control. We are quite confident that the delay will not be excessively outside of our normal fabrication timelines.
For the next steps: once the aluminium arrives later today (our time) your order will go into “Fabrication” from pre-fabrication. There aren’t many sub-levels to update you through each step thereafter (just one that indicates it’s being packed and shipped), so I’ll be emailing you as things progress and as your order is finalised and shipped out:)

just FYI

a couple of issues i see right from the top of my head there
will be these issues:when comparing sizes, 4,6,8gpu sizes
*it seems they are calculating 10cm between mounting holes
thats to little when you calculate in the width of the gpu itself.
three slots cards use 5,5cm of space just for bulk. that dont leave much headeroom anymore.*you will need to serial connect extenders for the reach.
*you will need pci express power extenders. no way the cables will reach
no matter what psu you have! -

May as well just get my hands dirty and build a rig myself.

I undervolted my sapphire to 1050 and here is my setting I used:
-g 2 -w 256 -I 13 --gpu-engine 1030,1030 --gpu-memclock 1500,1500 --gpu-powertune -20,-20 --thread-concurrency 8192,8192
717kh on average with temp between 58-62 degree, waiting for risers and they should be even lower then ill target 730-740

thanks for making my life easier! Looks like they are spot on with your findings so far. + rep
Tried your settings on my 4x 280X Asus Matrix rig,
get 74degrees with 85% fan speed (3000rpm) and 725Khash.
Power draw from socket went down 110w.so in summary, 6 degrees cooler and 110 wat less powerdraw, but also 100khash lost.
I think that i really have the cards put to tight together!, those three slot bastards are just to thight in my standard 4x rig setup.
gonna try and space em out to three cards on one rig instead.i have 2x 16Amp circuit breakers in my mining room (plus an extra 16amp i can put ONE 4x miner on).
16A == 3520W maximum power usage. so when a miner use 1350 each im not able to put three on one circuit breaker. If i scale em out however!
-
I have an external fan just pushing air into it my cards, so thats why im getting 58 - 62 degree. My video card fans are running at only 2000 rpm makes me very happy man :D but than again im in northern France where its freezing so nature is helping.
110 less watt and 6 degree cooler i think is worth 100 KH in the long run.
Keep me updated on 3 vs 4 and what temp difference you achieve, I think if I can get 740 kh around 65 degree than ill be a happy man… Sapphire R9 280x are only 220 euro right now in Europe… just got 4 more ;D
Yeah i also have a fan (wind machine big as 110W fan) that blows air through the rig, however it still seems to have heat pockets, if not the asus matrix NON platinum is really a shitty card. Will know very soon=P
-
Well. That officially sucks.
at 1080/1500 and with fan speed of 85%, AND only three cards on the rig leaving alot of space and a room temp of 24,5degrees.IT STILL GETS 81DEGREES!
Gonna return theese and order the platinum edition, oh no wait. i cant cause that edition is on backorder until 20.12.2013 (whiiich means i dont get em before over newyear)
-
edit.
Dont seem asus matrix will undervolt. there physical buttons to overvolt, but not under… damnit!
the script settings for cgminer dont touch it…that 110w must have been a fluke or something
EDIT2:
I figured out that the 110w drop could be that i set powertune to -20 to. voltage IS locked to 1.256 with possibility to overvolt.funny thing is that i removed the external fan, the card dont seem to like external fans!, cause now i have
79/70/70 temp, 750khash and fan speed 46%/36%/36% !!! its whisper sound (25degree room temp)EDIT 3
instead of hugging this thread ill report my findings in my own.
