Not exactly mining question but maybe pre-mining :)

Wonder if one of you experienced tech heads can be kind enough to offer some advice. Someone gave me a card to try out mining with, it’s a Radeon HD6850, I’ve been assured it’s working. I thought I’d give it a whirl before splashing out on decent kit. Right here I’ve got my standard PC I use for surfing, it has a Phenom X6 and PSU is 380 Watt . So I fitted the card and drivers and everything installed OK, then I went through the windows experience test and about 3 minutes in the computer power completely cut out, then to get it back on I had to click the switch at the back.
Do you guys think this is an underpowered PSU issue?
-
most definitely. thats all the signs of insufficient power. 380 watts isnt even within the requirements for that card im sure.
-
Yep, that’s one anemic PSU. Use this http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp to see what you need.

Yep I think the comp has always been underpowered to be honest and a cheap PSU to boot. I just wondered if you guys thought I was right to be checking there first rather than the card or something else and I guess you do, so thanks for the awesome input.

nice calculator, very comprehensive, it comes back with 370 watts though, which is odd. But I think I’m gonna just go with a 600 watt or something. I’ve had dropouts on some devices if I connect too many USB devices aswell, is that also a symptom of a weak PSU? and have you guys got a fav brand?
As far as brand goes, the general consensus around here is to get a Seagate. My bottom line though, get a reputable brand with great reviews and make sure its 80 plus certified. Keep in mind when you’re shopping future upgrades to your rig as well. If you are thinking of getting that 600 watt, you might be able to find something a little beefier for very close to the same price. GPUs use quite a bit of power. Whatever you do don’t skimp on the power supply. It’s not worth it to save some $ and in the process kill your system/burn down your house.
Thanks for the advice, but I can’t seem to find any current Seagate PSUs on the market…
