How to maximise member contributions to Feathercoin Developments \* Finding Stuff
-
There is a lot of information in the forum, but we know when you don’t know what to look for, it can be difficult to find it.
In order to make searching easier, we have marked many support issues with [Solved], in some cases * “The Action that solved it.”
Obviously, the system would be better if it was proper maintenance system, but then everyone would need training up on how to use it!
All bugs, software changes, web updates need to be controlled more thoroughly. The de facto open source standard for that is GitHub. Any major issues raised during forum discussion or Support will be moved to an issue in Github.
This is also makes change control transparent and easy for such as the Website development. Updates are pushed as a Patch which can be easily checked Locally, then Pushed to the Github. All issues can be tracked and it is clear who has been allocated the Task when a “fix” is needed.
Then, any fix causing problems can be easily withdrawn. It makes it possible for a couple of people to control a large amount of input work from various contributer, a core requirement of Feathercoin…
(Note, that the most risky change is “design out”, This maintenance task type has the highest level of further unknown bugs or side effects and most expensive to implement. That is why it is a always the last resort)
C.C. Feathercoin Discussion (Web Site enhancements).

I agree with you there, prevents newbie’s from asking known answers and leaving the forum because they could find the simple question in the bulk of info. So the ‘‘solved’’ / ‘‘sticky’’ thing is a thing to work on (which you already did, I noticed).
The bugfix github thiny is mysterious for me, I don’t really get it.

On some (IT related) forums you can select an answer as the solution.
The ‘solution post’ will then get a green “V” or some or at least a different color so that you can scroll for the correct answer instead or scrolling trough countless posts, might be something that works for us.I don’t know if it’s a ready to go addon for SMF tho.
It’s very simple.
On github there is a possibility to track issues and assign developer to solve the issues.
The process is to fork the actual version on github, apply the fixes and request to merge your fork with the main version.
Then the ‘chief developer’ ( = Bushstar ;) ) tests the fix and merges it into the next release candidate of the code.
As far as I know, the development tree of the wallet is not public, so if you want to participate send a PM to Bushstar to get you added.

I’m just trying to get the functional aspect of the Feathercoin website re-design disused.
As well as inform on how we’ve implemented members previous discussions to make information on the forum more useful.
For instance, in trying to make finding information in the forum easier. Or as I call it, “dealing with the massive support headache”, if we don’t!
That is, I know a bit of working out what is the best, efficient, thing to do. Our requirements. Will make any changes to the web site more effective.
I hate doing work for nothing or twice. Especially with limited resources.
The other way to reduce the potential support work load is : Make it easier for members to get involved.
Options, for prioritisation / ideas
0. Do nothing, Everything is Ok and there is nothing to worry about.
1. Produce, Training, Guides, Videos Conferences. : Widen member knowledge of what is needed.
Feathercoin development procedure, moderation, use of software, mining, use in buisness2. Work to make getting involved simpler, improve infrastructure.
3. Make small teams with varying times / or skill sets act as one / mentors.
4. Report Jobs / Tasks that need doing and give Rep Bounty, more officially.etc??

This isn’t really my area of expertise but I would like to pitch a few idea’s here.
I would suggest breaking the Discussion catagory down a bit more.
Have a whole catagory for anything related to speculation. Whether it be price or hardware etc.
I think we need more child boards. Navigation needs a little bit of improving I think.
A catagory for creative works like music / video / art. It would give me an area to thrive in regards to the ftc band I would like to try pioneer.
A whole catagory for Scammer alerts. Maybe a childboard in it for potential scams for review.
Auto PM’s sent to people after they make their first Newbie Post. Containing information like forum guidelines, warnings about links in pm’s. Explaining how the rep system works (mini screenshots showing where it appears when it’s available to them). Link’s to the major guides like mining, wallet installation and management, etc. A link to “notify” for the newsletter so as many as possible can be kept up to date if they don’t come to the forum often. Link to pointing out the Feathercoin map. Link to wallet download. A link to the Scammer alerts catagory i mentioned above, or maybe have a pinned list of known scams/scammers. - Think of it like a welcome pack in a way.
None of this is to subtract from welcoming newcomers, it just makes it a little less informal and more friendly without having to repeat the welcome mantra. Would allow welcomers to focus more on helping the new comers find a direction they would like to take.
That’s all just off the top of my head but if I think of anything else I’ll pitch it here as edits.

Yeah, Calem… That’s what makes Feathercoin different!!!.
We need to invent the mechanisms to make that so, analyse its importance, organise the tasks implementation.
For instance, we need some members to control GitHubs for other things, like ARTWORK or the web site. As well as Forks of the software.
I already have a Github, I advise you to set up one, we can start “a new website” development there. Maybe have 3 alternate Feathercoin web sites being developed at once. They can then be voted on by Members and Patched to "Admin Feathercoin " Github. Its easy to Pull that and depoy it for Admin.
A Staff would anounce, githu/Calem proto type Splash screen (development control)
when task version completed - Peter would Pull it to Github/FeatherArt
We’ll start stub Sticky threads on Technical Development, to get member discusion input.
Again, your comments were enlightening…
You ask for more boards, but that was the trouble before “too many boards”… But things have changed, we shouldn’t be pedantic and say limited boards forever?. We need a mechanism to review and define requirements easily (no admin).
I think the last discussion on the NEW WEB site development got stuck at responsibility at Admin, I can see now we can go on and develope some new FEATHERCOIN Web site (v3) and Art work ideas - Admin can catch up later…
Say again?
Sorry, I was just pitching ideas for the current forum as it stands… I don’t know website dev/design. It’s mainly the newbie induction pack idea I was pushing the most.
This forum is far better layed out then a lot of other forums out there… I was just thinking of ways to de-clutter the “Discussion Category” for the non-forumy types.
