Need help trying to undervolt my cards in linux (need linux "expert")

So i have my mining rigs all set up.
Still short of 4 cards, but im getting closer.Im however looking into undervolting my Asus 280X, since they are really high volted out of box (1.256v!)
Do anyone have any experience with AMDOverdriveCTRL?
Appearantly thats the one to use if under linux.The card should be voltage unlocked, and you are able to undervolt/overvolt in windows using TweakIt, the card has physical buttons to go up/down in voltage live buuut you cant go lower than the starting point 1.256! from there.
Im not able to do the changes through CGMINER --gpu-vdd.So if anyone have the time to do the walk with me one day on skype, or can give me a breakdown on how to install/setup here it would be much appriciated! ;D

I’m in the same situation with my Sapphire 280X Toxics. I have a MSI Radeon R9 280X and a new MoBo on its way today the nice man says delivery this afternoon 8)
So when I take my rig to bits to do the upgrade I was planning to spend a bit of time working on the voltages, I will keep you posted if I get anywhere with it as would like to get the power draw down a little more

Hi Guys,
the RADEON linux driver is lacking the undervolt feature.
In order to change the GPU voltage(s) you need to modify the bios.
I did that without problems on my AMD 6950, but I’m not sure, if it is possible for your cards.I created a small DOS os on a usb stick, booted from usb, pulled the flash image with atiflash, modified the flash image with radeon bios editor on a windows machine and pushed the flash with atiflash back to the gpu.
You can download the tools from [url=http://www.techpowerup.com]http://www.techpowerup.com[/url],but again, I’m not sure if your cards are supported

It adds the ability to change those values. fan/engine/volt for the original amd linux drivers.Dont wanna go off flashing all my Asus 280X (have 15 of em…), and basiclly its just the one rig with cards a bit closer that is beeing the pain in heating.

It’s always a hassle to flash the gpu bios and I always cross my fingers and pray that everything goes well, if I need to do it ;)

Couldn’t be bothered to wait for the delivery so started messing around after reading the post…
I’m using BAMT and AMDOverdriveCTRL is there pre-installed but when you run it you get an error message about being “Unable to initialize AMD ADL Library”
The AMD Catalyst Control Center is also installed, but when I try to run that nothing happen at all!
So a quick google and I found a post over [url=http://rumorscity.com/2013/12/08/amd-display-driver-update-for-r9-290x-on-bamt-litecoin-miner/]here [/url] about updating the drivers within BAMT
Follow everything to the letter, and go through the steps of updating my drivers, after about 20mins I’m done… still get the same message from AMDOverdriveCTRL and now AMD Catalyst Control Center comes up with an error message about no drivers being installed or the driver is not functioning correctly!
I’m mining again at 250Kh/s less on each card! the clock speeds from my cgminer.conf are being ignored and I’m using about 50W more electricity :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Stupidly, I did this on my “live” BAMT USB key so now need to go and rebuild things back the way they where :-\

This is interessting, ive steared clear from bamt since i found the USB to be really slow.
Might be i need to look into this againOr i need to get me an windows corporate key and rebuild all my miners to windows again…

No worries, I’m sure it was going to happen sooner or later :D
I have an older version that I can run on whilst I reboot it that will give me a better hash rate for a little less power but won’t be the settings I had as thats down to the driver version!
I don’t have any problems with speed of the USB as far as I know. I might have a mess about with the Windows side of things in a bit but don’t really want to lose a whole day of mining :-\

I’m in the exact same boat.
I just got my first Elec bill, scary, being charged $0.37 kwh! I have three cards going, and need to get things under volted.
I’m on BAMT, the only way I have seen is changing the BIOS, I don’t really want to have to do that, as my sapphire cards have the whole trixx under / over clocking with voltage built in.

[/quote]If your on BAMT then you could just use AMDOverdriveCTRL.
However if you use cgminer, you might as well see if your able to change the voltage there. i can with my other non Asus cards…

A little more playing in the early hours of the morning…
Using the options from within CGMiner I managed to drop the voltages on my Toxics :D
I have got them down from 1.256 to 1.2 and no effect on hash rate as yet, only been running about 6hrs thou. I have tried to get them a little lower this morning was thinking of dropping in .05 steps to start with then finer tweaking once I start to see a drop in hash rate, but when I go through the options in CGMiner to do this it’s makes no difference to the reported voltage on the cards ???
So my next plan of attack is to hard code the drop to 1.2v in to my cgminer.conf and restart the miners then try again using the options to see if it’s something silly like only being able to accept a single volt change per re-start not that there is any reason why it should.
I will also pull some numbers of it for you so you can see what the power savings (if any) are

Then i will have 19X 280X cards, which is my limit with current condition (electricity/temp) -

[/quote]Cheers svennand, I manged to get AMDOverdriveCTRL working a few days ago when I was testing a few things out. I have three cards in there, 7950 x 2 and the 280x, I had my monitor pluged in the HDMI of the 280x and AMDOverdriveCTRL selected that one, but not the others, so I’m wondering if It can only edit what the monitor is connected to?
I was moving the settings around, the high and low for the voltage, but I don’t think it made any difference :/.

[/quote]Cheers Muddy, did you do anything special to get it to change? I’ve tried the cgminer settings in the past and it didn’t seem to do anything :/. I think we have the same 280 toxic.
I really need to get my power lower, I’m drawing 620W with my two 7950, and over 900W with my 280 in the mix also. All on a 750W rated PSU…
My bill is of worry, I’m paying $0.35 a kwh :o

When ever I try and load AMDOverdriveCTRL it’s been via an RDP session never from the machine it’s self… I will try that a little later and see what happens, but bust at the moment building a P2Pool server for a laugh and to see what happens ::)

[/quote]Yeah I always go in via remote connection also, but when I was troubleshooting with connected monitor to my surprise it loaded up! (just the one card though), I tried later via remote, and got the same driver error as I’m used to seeing.

SSH to your box, then type the following
[code]sudo -s
screen -ls[/code]This will return a line with a number in it that’s the important bit ie 1087, then the following replacing 1087 from my example with the result you get.
[code]screen -r 1087[/code]
Don’t just kill the window when your done as this will stop your miner from running. So do CTRL+A then D to disconnect from the screen.

I use aticonfig on Ubuntu. I think it comes with AMD Overdrive, but I’m not sure. Have you tried that?
