Cooling Options

So, I have R9 270 x2. Installed the second one a few days ago, it was running really well for a couple of days after I installed a small 4" fan. First 270 was running about 69 deg C, second was running ~ 73 Deg C… both steady for a few days at about 460 - 475 khash/s each.
I don’t know what changed, but now they are both running over 70 C with the second going to 77-78 C.
I’ve had to scale back on overclocking settings to keep temps down, but this also impacts my hash rate by a lot.
Any suggestions on cooling… I don’t want to have to put a household fan up to the open case if I don’t have to.

Are you letting the driver control the GPU fans or are you using cgminer settings?

I am letting cgminer control settings. Fan is set to Auto

Few questions or things to check
1. Seems obvious, but did ambient temps or airflow change?
2. Are these used cards or brand new?
3. Is there visible dust or animal hair in the fans, heatsinks?
4. What RPM does cgminer state the fans are running at?
5. Is your pool variable difficulty?I had to apply new thermal paste to some cards in the past - dry and cracked.
I’ve also had fans suddenly go bad on me before, check those RPMs. -
i was gonna say that it sounds like the thermal grease is applied bad.
cards use a couple of days to settle (thermal compound heat up)
at least thats my experience -

[/quote]May not matter much now, the cooler running GPU’s fans stopped working. I’ve had it about a week, maybe less than that and the fans already quit.
Could have been ambient temps, it was colder during the last few days. No animal hair or dust. RPMs were 2000-2500. Pool difficulty was 256.

I swear I’ve got Gremlins.
I powered down the machine, went so far to unplug it, then restarted it. I did this twice. The second time, things work amazingly well, but I’m scared it won’t last. Performance stats:
GPU 0: 68.0C 1742RPM | 464.0K/466.3kh/s
GPU1: 69.0C 2614RPM | 474.9K/477.2kh/s
