Want to mine with someone technical (NL)

Calem, I was thinking of the 270 range of cards as they are way cheaper than the 280 range that I have been building mine with. I’m done with work for the day now, so I’ll start to pull together a shopping list for you. I’m due to come over to Amsterdam in April but I fear that is to far off for you
-
OK couple of questions…
1. Do you want to be able to expand on this? so lets say you invest your 500 euro today, are you going to want to give it more hashing power in a couple of months after pay day has been around a couple of times?
2. Open frame or closed case?
-
muddy, When it comes to price vs kHash/s, the strait 270’s can’t be beat.
I spent a few weeks researching before going for the 270.
The Bits Be Trippin crew have found a nice R9 270 (Twin Frozr) by MSI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YivUxRxkBw but still can’t push it to 480kHash/s.
It does have only one 6 pin connector for power though, so I would be epic for multi card rigs over 2 gpu’s but yeah.
One day I’ll get myself enough gear to do a big rig, but for now, I’ll just eventualy get this riser card and nice custom frame to mount everything on.
-
Don’t bother with a closed case… honestly, you don’t want to ahy… It might look pretty but having an open design will allow the rig to breath 10 fold compared to a closed in system. Otherwise, you might end up having to look at some sort of after market cooling.
If your running only 1 card, gutting out an old case, and using a mini atx mobo, will both save you money and still keep temps within an acceptable range.
-
Calem, how many kH/s are you getting out of yours?
I’ve promised the Mrs, no more “silly coin” hardware for a bit, (shhh don’t say anything about the ATM project) but I would like to see what I can do with a 6GPU machine next, just for a bit of fun!

Distancewise Amsterdam isn’t a problem, Leiden and Haarlem are both close to Amsterdam. I see Calem just said a closed one isn’t the best thing to do.
About expanding, it’s not really about the money right now, I just don’t want to invest too much in it since I’m still a poor student which doesn’t want to lose his valuable fiat to a risk (did I just call crypto’s a risk? C’mon have some faith!). But if I like the small rig I might expand it if I can make some money out of the mined coins, yes (Calem doubles his khashes with just a 30% extra cost or so).
Also the rig will be in the room where I sleep, eat and study. I assume more cards will produce more sounds.

Solid 480kHash/s.
Not sure if a second card would run the same speed… I put in my second but it went to 95 degrees Celsius then crashed the system… That’s where risers come in…

To be honest, the 270’s I have are no where near as loud as the aircon running above em.
I grew up as a teen with stupidly loud computers running in my room 24/7, so maybe I’m just accustomed to the sound…

Calem, any change you already got a video on your channel with your rig running including the sound? :)

If you go with a ASRock Extreme 3 board, with the correct risers you can get 4 cards running, is that enough expansion for you?

Yup, I might even have some stuff laying around at my dad’s since he’s into the PC’s but got to check that out when I’m over there.

I’m using the ASRock with a AMD ATHLON II 250 CPU picked it up for £21 of eBay, and 4GB of RAM (£11 from the Bay) with 4 280x Toxics, and there are no performance issues.

Those prices seem reasonable!

Just had a look on ebay.nl for a Gigabyte R9 270 OC 2GB and they look over priced, from here they come in at about 170 euro each
-
In common shops here I see; Sapphire, MSI and Asus but can’t find any GIGABYTES around here. Prices of the others are between 150 ~ 180 euro. Are these equal to the GB one?
/edit In online stores available in The Netherlands for approx 170.
-
My personal preference is to leave MSI’s alone, but only because I had a 280x that was that bad it got sent back after 48Hrs!
The Sapphire gets good press and is about 174 euro over here so your pricing sounds about right

So my list would be…
Motherboard: ASRock Extreme
**CPU: ** AMD ATHLON II 250
Memory: 4GB of anything you can get cheep cheep cheep
GPU: I’m going to go with Calem on this Gigabyte R9 270 OC 2GB
Storage: USB key anything 8GB or above
OS: BAMT
PSU: spend anything you have left from above on getting as much W as possible on a single rail
Casing: Open frame, If I had to buy mine I think it would have cost around £30 from B&Q
I feel the above will give you a solid bases to start from, you can add additional cards as and when funds allow, factoring in the prices of risers at the time.
Now you have a couple of options here:-
- You can try and get all the bits together over there, and I will help you build it over Skype, Team Viewer, etc…
- I can build your BAMT install and send you an image with instructions if you confirm your MoBo choice
- We can throw a bit of trust in here, and I’ll build it for you at cost and ship it over to you
In return I expect nothing for my services, just happy to help another person secure the network

I’ll lookup the list later - any clue on how much it would cost to ship a full rig to me?!
-
I’ve been doing some more digging and came across this at a good price, then started looking at Intel CPU’s they seam to be a little bit pricey TBH, but then it’s been a long time since I have purchased one with my own money, (I brought 64 i7’s today at work for a new VMware farm)
The list of supported CPU’s can be found here now if we could find a Haswell core Xeon for a decent price, they claim to only consume 16W! I know you said power was not an issue but heat reduction across the rig helps, and any power your not using here helps with more W being available to feed you GPU’s
I have no ice what shipping would be, I’ll measure and weigh my 4 card rig later and get a quote from DHL to get it to my friends in Amsterdam as a starting point for you

I do have a video on my channel, but it’s so dark it’s ridiculous… It does have sound… but I have a song playing over the top of it.
I’ve got work again tomorrow but what I can do is rerecord a new video for you.
I’m guesing your interested in the amount of noise the rig generates, correct?

I am running a few 7950’s @ 580 ~ 600 k/hash each (XFX) 200eu (alternate.nl).
Get a cheap board / cpu / ram @ marktplaats.nl and a decent 600watt power supply and you will have a 1mh/s+ rig :)
