Project: Homebuilt mining chassis
-
Heya,
I’m a big fan of DYI stuff so I decided that it’d be much more fun to build my very own mining chassis instead of just buying one from openrigs or something similar.
The design went through a few iterations in my head before I decided on what you can see below. First I wanted to build it with aluminum square beams, but that would have been way to expensive, so I decided on aluminum profiles instead (as seen below). It’s almost as robust as using square beams but at only half the price. I put everything together using blind rivets, again with price and design in mind (much cleaner than using bolts and nuts everywhere.
The result was a very robust construction that weights just below 1kg.
Why did I do this one might ask? Well it sure as hell wasn’t more economic than buying a finished rig! So be warned, you might get inspired by this but only do it if you think it’s fun to build stuff like this! ;)
Here are some pictures of the project in a somewhat chronological order. It took me three different sessions to get it all together.
High-res versions can be found here: https://plus.google.com/photos/113644216943453030707/albums/6027887477984011233?authkey=CIPY6c-c6rbmbA
The raw material
Started out by drilling some matching holes for the “corners to be”
Presto!
Blind rivet in place (actually had to redo this specific one due to me being sloppy poping the rivet in place :P )
Bottom square done!
Legs attached to the bottom layer
Basic structure almost finished
Added mid-support for the gfx-cards
Slaughtered an old chassis to get a motherboard plate (easier than figuring out the exact screw pattern for atx)
PSU in place
Tightened with two screws, solid as a rock!
Motherboard in place
The whole rig finished! The fastening of the HDD is somewhat temporary, will be switching over to an old SSD I’ve got lying around. Will enhance the fastening of that then.
There you go! :)
Hope I can inspire someone with this!

Thanks! :)
I’ll see if I can mock up somewhat of the same design in sketchup and share so people can get the design and measurements in an easier way :)
-
Wow! You’ve made that look easy. I know it isn’t.
-
Nice,I need too
-
Good to see people are still building GPU rigs!
Nice job. With Neoscrypt on the way it seems like smart move.
-
Hell yeah, aint giving the GPUs up just because everybody’s playing with asics nowdays!
For me this is something to fiddle around with during my spare time (not that I have any with a 1 year old running around at home but anyways :P).
I’ve just put in a bid to buy 6 x 750ti to fill this rig with instead of the noisy and warm 280x cards :)

Got 6 x 750ti badboys on the way in, sold off my 280x cards today for a swap. I’ll update with some pictures on how the rig looks full with cards as soon as I’ve gotten them installed ;)
