    My 7970 just blew and burnt like Lucifer's torch!

      I have to say though, i was pleasantly surprised by [b]DABS[/b]. I looked up their returns instructions and it stated to contact the manufacturer directly. Looked on the gigabyte website and it says to contact the retailer… Here we go again!

      So i phoned Dabs as that’s who the contract of sale was with ready for a row only to be disarmed by a very helpful lady from Bolton. Now I have some good friends that are “Boltonese” and the they usually eat beer glasses and punch horses to the ground in their spare time… ;D

      Conversation (abbreviated)…

      Me: Your site says see manufacturer and the their site says see you.
      Bolton: No worries, i can help.
      Me: eh?
      Bolton: Can i have the order number?
      Me: Not exactly, do you track serial numbers of cards sent?
      Bolton: No
      Me: Oh, ok, only I have place a couple of orders with you and a couple with someone else and i have no easy way of finding which one this is.
      Bolton: No worries, you’ve ordered one of those from us so we’ll just assume it’s ours.
      Me: Do you do advance replacements?
      Bolton: No, but you can order a new one and we’ll refund the old one once received…

      Net result, new card being delivered tomorrow (free delivery), collection of faulty card on Monday (free collection), and as i had to pay to order the replacement it was £26 cheaper than when i bought it. I will get a full refund once they receive the faulty one.

      Really couldn’t ask for more! [b]THANKS DABS![/b]

        That’s some pretty great customer service there. I’m not sure any of the retailers I deal with would be that accomodating.

            He didnt use Arctic Accelero extreme 7970 cooling, cause he wanted to save himself some bucks ;D

            was planing to find a good marshmallow picture, but after googling marshmallow for a minut now im off to store, i want marshmallows! ::)

              Indeed. That’s why i posted it here. People are too quick to complain but rarely compliment. I have had dozens of RMAs over the years and it’s usually hell! Dabs and Amazon though are fantastic for returns. I try to use them whenever possible.

              Dunno why it blew. Got an alert from my pool that said “Miner-02 down”, did a remote hard reboot (via my PDU) and… Nothing. Dragged my arse to the shed and sure enough there were no fans spinning on anything. I’m guessing the psu tripped. Powered it down for a minute again. Powered up and pfzzzzt! Fireworks!!!

              Unplugged the card, repowered the rig and the other 3 cards sprang to life an are currently mining happily.

              WAS a gigabyte ga-797oc-3gd. First card failure ever. Lets see if one of the other 19 blow.

                Lol. Glad i didn’t use the Accelero, i got £26 back! :D

                  haha damn didnt think about that.
                  Btw did you use powered extenders?, dont think that has anything to do with it since its to protect the mobo but nice to know.

                    Nope.

                    Just decided to let go for some reason. I think it’s a memory chip that blew. The component that you see in the photo is a [s]resistor[/s] capacitor but on the other side of the board under the heatsink there’s some soot for sure.

                    For the record, i never saw that card over 75c

                      Looks like a surface mount capacitor.

                      I remember reading on a litecoin forum others having the exact same problem.

                        Anyway, The second link is EXACTLY what i had happen. Thought the psu, moved around and POP!

                            I don’t know how many years you have been mining but has this been the hottest summer you’ve mined in?

                            Also is there any way your temperature readings are inaccurate?

                            Or would you put this down to a shoddy card?

                              Also is there any way your temperature readings are inaccurate?

                              This is the only summer i’ve mined in with 20 OC’d 7970’s stacked on top of each other. ;)

                              The temp readings are pulled from cgminer so not sure how accurate that is. Attached is a pic of the typical temps which do rise by about 5c throughout the day.

                              IMHO it was just a shoddy card. We can see what happens to the other 19 to gauge reliability… Time will tell.

                                I am thinking of building my own rig. Are these things a serious fire rig? I mean would there need to be someone on site at all times just in case or is the fire small and self contained?

                                  I don’t know but in case it does I put mine in a shed, I wouldn’t care about myself going up in flames but its for peace of mind for the little one at home.
