Visiontek rma..
-
i finally broke down and sent my 7950 with a broken fan in for rma since i couldn’t find a replacement anywhere. i shipped it out on a thursday afternoon with ups and received it back on thursday morning via ups. that’s not too shabby for 14 bucks shipping. excellent service. the only downside is that they swapped cards with me and the replacement doesn’t clock as well as the original. however, it’s mining and not baking bread now, so it’s all good…LMAO
gratuitous tech pics for all the knuckleheads like me who can’t seem to leave things in one piece ::)

Haha - i just had my 7990 apart to add a water block. shoulda got some pics.
This thing runs SO damn hot. 85c under water at stock settings. gotta try to undervolt it.

The fan on this HD7950 is a joke.
85 under water? Must be a crappy one. My ARES II scores about 75 overclocked to 1200MHz at default 1.25V. Both GPUs are single looped with two pumps. The shroud gets damn hot though, need to modify it somehow.
[s]You’ve confused me with the 2 pumps. Isn’t the ares 2 water-cooled as standard? have you modified the cooling solution on it? If so, what’s the full spec of the loop. [/s]
Scratch that - just looked at the setup an the ARES 2. It has a pump on each GPU. Worth noting though that ONLY the GPU is underwater with that setup. The RAM/VRMs are still air cooled.
I now, with some tweaking and turning up the pump speed, have the temps down to 71/76. I could bring the temps down further but i like silence so i only have the scythe gentle typhoon 1200 fans on the rad. I may upgrade to the 1800s but they’re noisier.
All 7990s are reference boards AFAIK so it’s only the bios that may change.
What hashrates do you get from it?
Also worth pointing out, my water loop also has my CPU on it (3930k). ;)
You can usually tell if it’s right by the water temps. If you have a hot GPU but your water is cool then it aint working. My water was 61c so it seems to be OK. Also, once i sped the pump up it helped alot.
ASUS ARES II and PowerColor AX7990 (Devil 13) were released before reference HD7990. I was getting about 650KH/s per GPU at 1200MHz under Linux with intensity 13. Wanted to try if Windoze allowed to run at higher intensity, but it crapped unexpectedly. When I had powered the machine up after some maintenance, I had noticed a spark and magic smoke coming from somewhere inside. Had smelt my ARES II, pulled it out and removed the back cover.

3 ceramic capacitors molten, 1 cracked, remaining 4 varied in capacitance heavily. Replaced them all. Those missing parts above the failed capacitors must be RC chains to prevent high inrush currents which can damage capacitors. A smart ASUS engineer designed them in and a dumb one supervising the project removed them to save a few cents on a $1500 card. What a shame.
