WARNING - BTC-e Trollbox Admin handing out 600 Day bans
-
Keep in mind that BTC-e may not be around forever.
Last I checked, BTC-e owners are anonymous.
I only use them to exchange quickly and move funds off.
Don’t leave anything on there that you can’t afford to lose.
Bitparking exchange crashed in May and has had detrimental effects on its users. So far their customers’s funds have not been completely accounted for 100%.
That’s a valid concern. BTC-e is a Russian exchange with the most of their personnel in Moscow. Don’t know where the server is located physically due to CloudFlare protection though. However, the exchange seems to be a property of some business located in Bulgaria as they refer to the Bulgarian law system in their terms of service.

I just got the 600d ban hammer. I think it was for posting a link to the Gox Facebook page. I wasn’t swearing or typing in all caps.Right before it happened, I said: “Hey, look! we can post http:// links in the chat now…” and I posted 2 links – one to the Facebook page and one to risechicken.com.
Then, bam! 600d ban with no warning. I logged out and logged into an alternate account I had. That one was banned for 600d too. WTF?
Admin planned that one before he hit me. Went and pre-banned the other account first… then got my ‘binaryloop’ account. (Or maybe it was IP ban?)
Still no word as to what I did wrong.
The people who were in the chat at the time were like – “haha fake ban” – but, it’s real. Whatever. I already pulled my funds out of BTC-e.
That is very strange, I am going to investigate. Thanks for sharing this.

I generally have a very fair perception of admin
He’s a weak little puss hiding behind a keyboard. If you’re going to ban someone – tell them why. At least you give warnings and appropriate bans. (1 day, 3 days, 5 days, etc.) But, a total 2 year banhammer for “advertisting” when I wasn’t even advertising is way too harsh.
All it’s going to do is lose them business. The first time they did it to Erk and Dunnington I think they tense after the DDoS and thought maybe they were part of it or something. I think they are feeling the threat of competition now all these new exchanges are coming online.

I wasn’t “advertising”, I was linking to some comments on the Mt Gox Facebook page.
Same here. I linked to a forum post and was banned for another users content within that forum post (I assume). Which means the admin had to visit the link, then decide he didn’t like the content of another user at that link and then ban me for that users content.
Then again, I was always under the assumption I was banned for that link. However, looking back I was also insinuating rather strongly the BTC price was being manipulated by someone on BTC-e for several days leading up to my ban. Perhaps that was the real reason(?), since I was never given a reason … just a link to the rules which do not apply to any action I took in chatbox.
They just don’t like competition over on BTC-e and the admin is weak. I think that 600 days is extreme. For one link. Why not just permanent ban? Why 600 days? Why didn’t he give me a warning?
Yep.
I withdrew all money on that account and will be spreading it out to other accounts and exchanges.
Good move. My escapade with BTC-e made me look into them and it’s participants in more depth. I will never again trust BTC-e with my funds for any period of time. My ban was a godsend.

I feel the need for perspective here.

BTC-e is one of the largest exchanges. FTC being on it helps ftc out immensely over other cryptos.

FTC typically has more volume on BTC-e then all other exchanges combined.

The trollbox administration is up to the individual admin’s interpretation.

BTC-e is where the multipool miners go to dump their FTC because the price is almost always higher than the other exchanges.

(my interpretation)FTC makes BTC-e quite a bit of money since their take is based off of transactions. FTC usually has the most transactions.
With that said. Several months ago I got banned for 90 days for literally just checking out what a special character did in the trollbox. 1st and only offense. I was relatively new then. However, many others like “fontas” got lighter bans and had them immediately lifted. What I learned during that time is that BTC-e trollbox is a propaganda place for whoever can control it. It’s a quite good one at that. If you can get your coin mentioned enough there then that can improve the outlook for it. Or who controls the pump and dump. I lost a bit of respect for some of the admins of the site during this time. Will also never transfer fiat into them because of this.
Now on exchanges? BTC-e volume is massive compared to other sites. The only way to get away from BTC-e is to get volume up on other exchanges. Cryptsy has an alright volume so it is an alternative(one I use). Though the people bringing in the volume are the guys switching to ftc to dump their coins to convert to btc, which requires btc purchases. If we want to not have such a centralized control over ftc by btc-e then as a group we need to actively support 2 other ftc exchanges at least. This doesn’t mean just saying their awesome. This means actually buying and selling there. A side benefits with this is it diffuses some of the pump and dump. Real hard to pump and dump something if you need to manipulate 3 markets. Now I’m mining other coins and then selling them to buy ftc. So I’m a buyer of ftc on cryptsy. Though I’m a small buyer compared to so many others.
This is just my two cents.
lulz … my second reply to “admin” (who I’ve learned only has about 20 total bans, so now I feel speshulz) was about how a few individuals can make death threats, manipulate the markets in chat (get banned, get out of it, do it again) and just about anything else that I’ve seen go on there and nothing happens.
But, just to make sure my ban didn’t get lifted I threw in something like … “if I paid you more in fees could I then make death threats, manipulate the markets and occasionally crack a joke?”
The reply was … “ok”. The ban was not lifted as expected. :o
FWIW, if I didn’t see everyone else acting like an ass in there I wouldn’t either. I only join in once I see enough people participating … ya know, like driving the same speed as everyone else on the freeway so you don’t clog up traffic, even if they’re breaking the law by speeding. :-\
My link to this forum and it’s content once viewed was tame compared to other post that day and any other day. There had to be some other reason, especially considering this person has 20 total bans (allegedly) while koolio’s racked up nearly 1K in a short time span. :o
To some extent it truly is a trollbox but there isn’t enough consistency. I can kind of understand not commenting on different markets but some of the other bans? In the end it’s just admin whim. We all just have to realize that while we are trolling people in the trollbox btc-e is trolling us. Of course you could go to another chatbox and the same thing could happen. BTC-e doesn’t really have to worry about their reputation to much because they are technically top dawg. Also, they hide in the grey area quite a bit. For many I think this is seen as a positive thing because cryptos tend to draw the anti-regulation crowd.
Either way if a bunch of people don’t want to use btc-e then they need to put their money and coinage collectively in another exchange. What are the other exchange options? Who should we focus on in increasing their volume? I heard crypto-street was going to do away with ftc pairs.
