My trip to feathercoin meet
-
First of all let me introduce myself
My real name is Svenn-Andre. I started with Feathercoin a couple of weeks after their release.
I found the the idea regarding bounties for getting things like webpage/logos/etc done quite interesting.
So i started mining, mined a couple of thousand FTCs. Cant exactly remember the reason why, but I went back to mining Bitcoin/Litecoin.
Then browsing around on bitcointalk one day I saw that Feathercoin was stuck in a diff trap.
This is where I met Nutnut, he convinced me to grab my gear and help out. So I did by throwing my hashing power at the Feathercoin network.
(history reference 33000 fork). After this I looked a bit more into the Feathercoin core values/community and i was hooked.
Which is what put me on a plane going to England for my first participation in a Feathercoin meet.Snatch: I’M COMING TO LONDON!Cousin Avi - London
My trip to Feathercoin Meet
I promised to write up a review of my trip to the Feathercoin meet on Sat 7th September.
Sorry for the delay, been neck deep on the Feathercoin Skype helpline®, and dealing with some personal issues atm.Quick heads up, this thread is not productive to read, it is purely a recap of my impressions regarding my travel and the Feathercoin meet.
Everything is solely my point of view. But maybe someone finds it an interesting read ::)It all started with me jumping on the Norwegian plane@ Vigra Airport in Norway at around 21.00

Travel time was about 2.5hours but with WIFI on plane that time just flew by (get it :P ).
Of course this was the point of NO return, so of course when I fired up my mining monitoring app on the plane I watched how one of my rigs had just had a hard crash (4x7970)The plane trip was mostly filled with drunk Englishmen returning to their natural habitat, and Skype chatting. So not much to report here.
Arrived at Gatwick Airport around 23.15, just too late to catch the coach to Oxford City Center.
Gatwick was freaking huge compared to Vigra airport! (forgot to take a picture)
Luckily ChrisJ was there to meet me, so I had someone to pass the time with.Talked high and low about the latest situation with Feathercoin, his ideas, my philosophy and so on.
He left in a cab and I jumped on the next coach leaving for Oxford at 1.30.
Got to see Oxford at around 3.30am which, as an alone tourist, wasn’t that pleasant.
In the last 5 minutes until we arrived at the backalley bus stop i watch 3 police arrests,
and one reaaaally drunk lady puking her guts out over a hedge :)
And btw, that bus parking lot which was the endpoint seemed to be party place number uno in Oxford
(reference natural habitat for those other plane passengers)! However I managed to get me a cab that took me to Nanford Guest House (B&B), which was amazingly crappy, thanks for that referral Chris…

I found the landlord amazingly creepy, the rooms where shit almighty small and basically just had not been spent a dime on the last 50 years…
Short visualization:
The room was incredible small, I could not have my suitcase open if I was anywhere else then in the bed.
The shower was like 50cm/50cm so I could not move when showering and the bed had been broken for a long time
(you could feel a couple of springs were no longer attached to the construction and was just jamming themselves into your back).Lets just say I didn’t eat breakfast on Saturday morning but instead decided to have a stroll to look at the
scenery/get me some «safe» breakfast. After a couple of hours just going around there I decided to find
the Oxford Blue so I would know where to go for the meet later in the evening.Forgot to take picture of that horrible place, but when googling for some i stumbled apon these:

http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2008/jan/16/hotels.travelnewsI do not recommend this place to anyone!
Woke up early and did some sightseeing until the clock said Feathercoin meet time.
So i headed over to the Oxford Blue Pub.I first meet Geoff (Entimp) a nice and free spirit it seemed to me, soon followed by Chris (ChrisJ) and his posse (camera crew).
If people think he is enthusiastic/energybunny on forum, wait till you meet him in RL ;D.
Forgot to take photo of those two chaps :-[A little bit later Peter (Bushstar) and Ruthie showed up.
Ruthie was smiling as always :D
Peter was not like I had imagined (after the “draw bush” contest my compass was a bit messed up, also his Skype picture was OLD).
At this time I went into digging mode, I wanted to know about Peters vision regarding Feathercoin and crypto currency in general

I especially remember/liked the part of what peter(bushstar) said:
Bitcoin for the most part has to maintain the status quo, alternative crypto currencies like Feathercoin is where we can really try to evolve.
This benefits everyone including Bitcoin. We need diversity in crypto currency solutions if it is going to survive.
It is all open source, so any ideas that work for Feathercoin can ultimately be used in Bitcoin. Then Mark (Nutnut) arrived carrying one of his Mining rigs to show people how it worked, he was eager to get it up and running again (free power@bar).
We had a chat high and low about all kinda crypto stuff
Then as the time went on more an more people joined the Feathercoin meet.
I had a chat with Maria (Black Maria) who was there with her boss Raphael to represent/implement
Feathercoin to their store “Computer Assistance”.
The discussion was in the direction regarding hardware experience and so on.
This I find really exciting, I love the idea that you can buy computer hardware for crypto, that you then use to mine crypto!I also met Eric (Eric) a danish bloke who was mostly into Bitcoin but found Feathercoin interesting and wanted to know more.
Had a longer chat with him and he seemed like a good guy with an open mind regarding crypto currencies
(not the stereotype that only accept Bitcoin as a valid currency).
Eric left, Chris center, and Ruthie right
The meet went on with just a lot of conversations everywhere.
My head was about to explode trying to listen into every conversation, and given that English is not my native language…
I had to walk out for some fresh air from time to time. Also partly to get away from those freaking cameras all over the place ???Later in the evening Koolio and Reece showed up, which was nice.
Was able to dig a bit into the whole fpga scrypt concept. Got some figures for speed/price and saw some design drawings.
A very interesting conversation indeed, and they seemed to be the right persons for the job.
The night followed on with more alcohol being consumed and some fun playing a custom game (watch the chips)

Before the Alcohol had set in ;D
From left back row: Koolio, Reece, Mark, Svenn, Chris, Eric
From left front row: Chris(bartender), Geoff, Peter, Ruthie
Mark (Nutnut) had been so kind and contacted his wife regarding my bad B&B place so she hooked me up with another hotel (The Mariott Hotel).
Now this was a nice hotel!Me and Mark went to the B&B to check out of there, and Mark got a good laugh when he saw the room.
We both had forgotten to eat anything through the meet, so we drove directly to McDonalds drive-through,
where I got to see even more of London (20 overly drunk ladies trying to order food in the drive-through without car… it was a mess!).
Drove to his place and dug in to tasty burgers before he drove me back to a sweeeet hotel. The next day I spent with Mark and his family, visiting a local motorshow fair.
Whilst he played lasertag with his kids, Ii went off and won two goldfishes, my plan was that it could be the new Feathercoin mascot called Bush and Ruthie. Had an idea of making a live webcam feed of the fishbowl 24/7. But after discussing it with the rest of the crew we decided that it would be unfortunate if the goldfish died…=P
So now the fish is in custody with Mark and his family (sorry mark, haha).
The rest of the evening I spent looking over marks rigs, his servers, and just basically hang out at his place with his wife and kids, i think i got the hint that i should go back to the hotel the time Mark dozed off in the couch=P. They fixed me a cab for the next day and we said goodbye. The travel back home was a mess, with flight being delayed 6 hours and so on.
To sum it all up.
I had a GREAT trip, it was 100% worth it! I hope I can participate on another meet in the future ;D
I especially want to thank Mark and his family for their tremendous hospitality!
If they ever find out that they want to visit Norway, my door will be open! -
