A few noob questions
-
Hiya all, I have been going to move over to FTC for a while now, I have some GPU rigs going at really cheep power so it has not bothered me, But the difficulty now is horrendous, So I will be switching slowly over the next few weeks.
My noob questions are.
-
Is the load on my card split between GPU and memory? What ratio and does memory speed affect anything ( I mainly use 5870’s)
-
is there a merged mining pool for FTC? (with anything else?)
-
Can I still use my GUIMINER? (i’m not a cgminer person(too lazy lol))
Thanks in advance, I am still looking at pools to see which one takes my fancy (feel free to p.r.) , In the pool list, I would like to see where the pool operators are in the world.

Hi Squall, You don’t say what you are currently mining but i’m guessing Bitcoin? If it’s litecoin or anyother scrypt based coin then all you need to do is pick a new pool and carry on as FTC uses scrypt too.
in answer to your questions…

Yes it’s split. In Bitcoin mining you can pretty much crank your GPU to the max and then underclock all of your Video RAM to save heat/power. In simple terms, this is because the calculations needed to find a block fits on the GPU and has no need for Video RAM. With Scrypt coins the calculations are much larger and wont all fit on the GPU so it has to send chunks out to the RAM. As a result, you need MUCH higher RAM clocks for scrypt coins. Needless to say though, the GPU still works hard too. As for ratio it does indeed make a difference and it varies for every card. the best thing to do is look for someone else that uses the same cards and see what setting they use then tune from there. From looking around - 850/1200 seems to be a good starting point.

Affraid not.

You can use GuiMiner-Scrypt but i seriously recommend cgminer. We can help get you running. ;)
Finally, Pools… It depends what payment methods you want. If you want a steady income that’s pretty much guaranteed to achieve 100% of your estimated income then PPS is what you should look for. You get paid a fixed amount for EVERY VALID SHARE you submit regardless of whether the pool finds a block or not. I run a PPS pool based in the UK but tbh the stratum implementation is sooo smooth, it doesn’t matter where in the world you are - invalids are usually less than 0.5%. You’ll find me and a few others around here mining on it.
If you prefer a gamble (where you could make potentially more or less than your estimate) then PPLNS may be better for you.
Hope that helps a bit.
Feel free to shout if you need any more info.

Cool, Thanks for the help, Yes I was mining BTC and just using GUIminer.
I know the location of the pool does not matter, But I like to keep things “at home” per say, So I will take a look at yours.
All the rigs are down at the mo, Some gpu’s are gone, some just need new fans and a clean, So I will be doing this over the weekend, Seeing what I have left then I will be firing them up.
Thanks again guys.
