Should the Feathercoin Market be on a separate domain?
-
We recently had a Church that accepted Feathercoin as donations move away from us because we have an adult category on the Feathercoin Market. The Church is now taking other coins as donations which you might say could also be used to buy adult goods but not through the official websites of those coins. The concern is that whatever is on the market can be seen as endorsed by Feathercoin officially as it is on the official domain.
ChrisJ has been pushing for the separation of the market from the main site because of this reason. This can be easily done and I am putting it out to a vote here.
-
That’s not the only reason, that was just the explanation I gave for the church doing what it did.
A much better reason to have the Market on its own domain is because right now most of what you can do with Feathercoin all happens on this domain. But it’s a decentralised currency! Surely we want lots of websites out there taking Feathercoin.
It will be a real boost to new 3rd party devs coming in, seeing that there is more going on off the feathercoin.com website. It’s more of a missed opportunity than anything else.
Perhaps another solution would be to sponsor a competing market place to set up on their own domain and we keep ours here? That would also work, but remember that whatever we do on feathercoin.com will be see as an endorsement by the organisation.
-
Could someone lay out the argument in favour of keeping it on feathercoin.com?
-
I want it here, because people are comming here…simple.
-
Bushstar is wrong . I think the official website should provide comprehensive services .Initially, it will provide good value for the application and promotion.
-
I don’t know really I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have it on a separate domain.
But after all the issues we are having with .net .org etc do we really want our users searching around for other sites just to stumble on that porn or whatever that guy has hosted over there. The thing is the forum is here , you can download the client and the market being here just helps show the ecosystem that exists. The fact that it looks to be endorsed by the coin could be a good thing by giving people confidence.
Just my two feathers I would be happy enough if it moved as long as it was still obvious it existed on the main site and vice versa.
-
Why going through the hassle to main train another domain right now?
I think, as long as the market is relatively small, it can stay where it is.
Medium time range to long time range in the future it should move to another domain, especially, if there will be dedicated instances of the market per region or per country, as today’s biggest internent market has. I think, you know, which one I mean. ;) -
not sure, in a way its nice to have everything under one roof… not sure i care about this church; no FTC because we have an adult section :o, but BTC from SR works fine.
I don’t know what’s best, but i do know this dumb church’s option shouldn’t matter.

I think we should keep it here for now. Since feathercoin is still small it is important for newcomers to see all of the services that are available for this coin. If the market is somewhere else then they might not find it.
That’s a good argument. But if it does stay we need to push even harder to start getting 3rd party services off this website. Remember that it’s not only the Market but also Local Feathercoin, all the stats and the forum too.
One of the first thing someone does when they learn something new about a company/organisation is go to Google and get the outsider’s perspective. Right now that is where we are weakest and it needs attention. I have a do.com task list set up for Developer Relations just send me your email and you’d be more than welcome to help the effort.
-
As mentioned, I vote to keep it here for now. Once the market grows, and if we decide to take it to new places, we can move it off the domain. Maximizing our impact while we can. All the roads should now lead to one place.
I am not happy to move the stats, calc or explorer. I was always frustrated having to find sites all over the net for other coins and wondered why the official sites did not do more. With these tools we are providing the information most users want to see. I think that we can safely provide these details.
I can see and understand the reasons to move the market off the main site and will do so if that is the result of the vote.
We can have a link to the market from the forum.
So I vote for a move for the reasons mentioned by chrisj. -
You could put it on a separate domain and also keep the link in the top menu.
Or make a ‘links’ section where you can put the marketplace and other suggestions about where to spend your coins. -
No I wouldn’t want to move stats and calculator off either, I just think that you have a certain ‘allowance’, there should be only so much hosted on the founder domain and I think things like stats and calc are essential so once you start going in to other things like Market and Host.ftc.com that’s when you have to say it’s time to fly the nest and scaling out across the web.
Otherwise, as stated earlier, it just looks like Feathercoins can only be used Feathercoin.com. Which is bad for customer adoption as well as 3rd party developers.
And since it is so easy to host it on a new domain while maintaining a handy link on the menu, I only see benefits without any real drawbacks.
+1 exactly, those things called hyper links sure do come in handy sometimes :)

Well if you will be moving it (I still hope you will not) do it fast.
We should be glad our market is finally working and you want to move it few days after launch?
-
My opinion is churches and religion in general does more harm than any sex toy, I see no reason the marketplace should be moved to keep anyone happy. Maybe add an 18+ section where you have to state you are over 18 to enter because of adult content etc (I know anyone can click a link but if it is really against their beliefs they wont). We can’t change everything and start hiding certain things because 1 group does not agree with it. I can buy hookers, drugs, alcohol, guns etc etc with cash… you don’t see churches refusing to send the collection tray around because cash can be used for naughty things.

I agree it should not be moved to make anyone happy but that wasn’t the argument in favour, the argument in favour was that it would be appealing to 3rd party developers and potential customers because it would make Feathercoin look more distributed. Also there would be no downside to doing it.
What happened with the church is not really a big deal for me, but if we wanted to avoid incidents like that again having things like the market on another domain would help as it wouldn’t be seen as an official endorsement.
To be honest I do not want to move it however I have been told that I should so I am putting this poll up. I am too close to make an objective call on this one.
That’s a fair point, A site like cryptomarketplace.XXX or similar I have no issues with. My post was more a mini rant about the closed mindedness of churches in general… well if we can’t see Tony snorting coke off his hookers for cash it didn’t happen but if he pays in FTC then its bad. none of that happened btw… we paid in LTC :P
