NEWBIES - PLEASE READ OR BE IGNORED...

Ok, so crypto has hit the headlines and we have an influx of interest… Happened in April, happening again. There’s nothing wrong with that, we want an easy life… BUT, you must help yourselves a little…
Sorry if I seem like a grumpy git but i’m getting tired of people asking the same questions time and time again. I’m getting even more tired by the influx of PMs from n00bs asking me for advice on GPU’s, PSUs, motherboards…
The classic is “here’s my spec will that be OK?” and a quick look at the spec goes against just about every post I (and most of the other experienced miners) have ever made in this forum.
If you want to ask me a question, unless it really is a private matter, ASK IT ON THE FORUMS SO OTHERS CAN BENEFIT.
And for those of you that are reporting your own posts to draw mods attention to your questions, you are now on my ignore list!
Now - all that said and done if you have genuinely done your homework and are stuck on something and are not trying to be lazy a let others do all the leg work, I have all the time in the world for you. I’ll help you do your homework but I wont do it for you! ;)
That is all - happy mining… :D

But, when will I be rich?
I was told if I came to this forum and bought a video card I would be rich in no time. How long is “no time”?
If you aint rich already then you’re doing it wrong! ;D
And yes, i HAVE had those PMs too… “I need to pay off my student loan, will 1 rig be enough?”. ::)
-
I notice many people not looking to take the “google challenge” and just want people to respond to something thats all over the nets. pretty lazy imo
I was thinking about writing up a help ticket template and adding some quick links/guides for users to follow.
You hit the nail on the head there. the person didnt have time, so its better to get someone else to do it.
Nothing personal. its just how things have been lately.Who wanna search through the forum and collect all the tutorials/guides/information around here? I honestly dont have time (then agan i do not need any guide…)
But if someone wanna put in the effort i would be most grateful 8) -
Thanks Svenn, my thoughts exactly -(about myself) ;)
I have a little link here, I hope it helps :)

Support is a necessary evil. The web site is so good now it has been tweaked. A few more tweaks are required to help new people, with less Geek knowledge.
Certainly, I have also gently warned people that mining is pretty advanced and maybe they haven’t the temperament, without putting them off. It will get easier, there are other things people could do tho’.
We need an easily available FAQ, using asked questions.
I’ve actually enjoyed doing some support over the weekend. It and it takes me back, to my system support days…
Me: “Now press any key” Them: “Which ones the ‘any key’”?
I’ve actually enjoyed helping the people who joined over the weekend, there were actually a factor of 10 less support questions than I expected. Particularly as we seem to be support for every known aspect and software involved in Crypto currency and mining!!. Pretty damn impressive.
A few new user did some complicated things, like compiling, we also picked up some bugs. You are right though, we have been over run and it is important not to disturb developers train of thought (with direct support questions). It is a waste of that rare skill.
We could certainly need more volunteers for support. Its a bit of a knack, but like Sherlock Holmes, it is satisfying solving the problems (mostly easy and in a guide), to the right type of person.
They could then filter any serious problems to the more technical members…

i have another idea,
to be continued… -
Svenn no offensive taken :) - you know me, all is good 8)

Another idea would be to have an Artificial Intelligent software Avatar that answers most asked questions with quotes from the forum and guides. We could start with Alice an old timer, still going.
It would be quite funny if it was semi random + it could learn to get better, by trying to gain Rep points, for correct answers.

A cool feature for a forum (especially in the newbie section) would be an automatic search that happens as the user is typing in this message field (like Kayako support suite does). While they type, the words are searched instantly through all existing threads and offers up suggestions for threads as the user types (at the bottom of the screen). This is used for customer service queries and knowledgebase searches, but would be a nice addition to any forum software (if possible).

I’m glad I wasn’t too much of a burden ;-)
On a serious note though, I tend to ‘lurk and learn’ before I jump in and I’m certain it pays off.
Sometimes new users need a little encouragement to help themselves rather than expecting help on a plate.‘Alice’ would be a fantastic addition if it’s possible…

Here is a basic template for people to use who need help:

Thanks for this thread Nutnut. I didn’t read it, but I’m sure it’s great. I will PM you with my mining hardware questions in a few mins…
