Mining setup assistance please :)

Hi,
I am new to mining feathercoin. At the moment I have a fairly weak Nvidia GPU and have read you should not mine with Nvidia, so though i would give CPU mining a try. I am aware that this is not as effective, however i am just trying to learn how to configure and set everything up and see how I go for now.
I have downloaded and installed an FTC wallet, and created an account on give-me-coins.com and added a worker. I have installed GUIMiner scrypt as I read it allows for CPU mining. I have added a stratum proxy and tried to add a new miner. The problem I am having is that my CPU isn’t available in the drop down box to select (only the GPU is there). Do I need to do something to add it? Or am I doing something wrong?
(I have also tried a number of other miners, but havent had any success with these either. i have no idea what I am doing wrong)
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Managed to get it working using pooler cpuminer :) got a very low khash/s though :(

Well, what’s your definition of ‘very low khash/s’? ;)
I get 2.5 khash/s out of my dual core cpu running at 1800 Mhz, so I don’t CPU minining at all.
Even with an old Nvidia card - I started with a 8400 GT- you get better results, if you use cudaminer and the cuda toolset from the Nvidia website.
The problem is, that you need to supply some shares within less than 2.5 minutes, otherwise a new block is found before you send your work and it’s useless.

At current difficulties i would honestly say CPU mining is doing nothing other than wasting time.
nVidia mining is borderline a waste of time too simply because of the huge power needs for little hashrates.
AMD gpu mining imho is the only way.

Oh no not that low. I get between 40-50khash/s using my i7-2600, but from what i’ve seen that is very low in comparision to GPU khash/s.
Yep you are definitly right about that Nutnut. Took me about 24hrs to get 1 coin. I am upgrading my GPU soon, so might see how I go with a 7970.

7970 are great (I use them) but be sure to get a good one. There are dozens of posts around here with peoples experiences of the various cards, do your homework before you buy and you’ll be golden! ;)
