R9 270 - Tweaking - \[BAMT SMOS\]
-
Wow, I missed out on this (doing support) I haven’t been looking at mining. [BAMT SMOS]
Has it been announced? Chrisj is looking for stuff for News, this should be in!..
Wow… Brilliant.
-
Thought i would mention… BAMT SMOS will mine litecoin for 15 mins at 3am local time for the dev of the distro.
The line of code can be removed out, but its a standard donation thing that comes bundled in… many are claiming its a scam and that its not mentioned but the guy who did this has clearly posted on the main site that his setup will auto mine ltc for 15mins at 3am local time. but If it impacts on me too much i might remove it. i might not. its worth it considering the speeds it gets for me… that and the drivers and everything for R9 cards are all ready packaged in.
-
Small update.
Note to self… need risers…
GPU0 temp: 90c
GPU1 temp: 69cTotal hashrate: 960Khash/s
Total Watts: 460 wattsThese temps are getting dangerously high… This is with cold air been pushed over em as well.
A riser is required.
If I left the speeds un-tweaked, then maybe I wouldn’t worry so much. But 90c is just a little to close to 100c…
-
That 90c is too high.
Drop some engine or memory ticks to be safe.
You can also try to lower the intensity with 1 or 2 -
Dropped:
intensity -> 18
engine -> 1100
memclock -> 1400Concurrency is still 16000
GPU0 temp: 78c
GPU1 temp: 67cTotal hashrate: 760Khash/s
Total Watts: 395 wattsSo I’ve lost about 100Khash/s from each card but I feel confident they won’t die/fry overnight.
I’ll put my tweaks back up to my “max settings” once I get a riser to give them some breathing room.
Thanks again prensel!
edit
I turned off the aircon and GPU0 shot up to 84c instantly…
I’ve shut down the whole miner for tonight. They need risers.
If they were in there own machine each, then the heat is fine. But together, it’s too much without rising them away from each other.
Tomorrow, I might just run it as a 1 card system until I get said riser.

You may have mentioned this already, but are you running linux via thumb drive?
Yeppers.
no hard drive, no dvd/cd drive. I just boot BAMT SMOS strait from USB. The GPU drivers etc are all ready on there so you just need to configure your .conf files and away you go.
-
Got my R9 270 going.
I used catalyst to take gpu clock to 1050 and Memory Clock to 1500. With those changes, guiminer went from 411 khash/s to 443 khash/s. Holding steady at 66 degrees C.
Somehow I can’t get the cgminer config file to be loaded. Gives me a JSON error and that it can’t be loaded. :(
I’m still messing with it.
-
Hey Calem,
thanks for telling me about the R9 270. I bought one new, for the same price as a S/H HD6970.
We couldn’t get the USB BAMT working, but we’ve installed the usual 12.04 Kubuntu / cgminer , and it is running really cool at 250 KHash.
We’ve just set up 2 virtually the same Core2Duo Towers, (HD68970 / R9 270) both running at 250 HKash, so we’ll try and compare the watts.
I don’t really go for max hash (after blowing up 2 power supplies) , just cheap builds.
Hey that’s kewl =^-^= They’re a nice cheap card considering how far you can push em. I think from here on in, I will only buy and tweak R9’s that have no “X”
Did you try BAMT SMOS?
I couldn’t get the normal BAMT working. I went with SMOS because it all ready has the drivers in it for the R9 series of cards.
Oh ok.
Have you tried pushing intensity to 19, concurrency to 16000, etc? Or can those other changes only be done in the cgminer.conf file?
I really must of fluke this.
When I get my riser my little rig will kick some serious butt.

Proof
Also sorry it’s so dark… The camera I recently bought is designed for outdoor use :(http://youtu.be/s7eXqEh8ZkA
Yes, those numbers are with intensity set to 19 and concurrency to 16000 I can’t set much else other than the GPU Clock and Memory clock I already mentioned. Rig has crashed twice though, since yesterday, not sure why. My max with this card is ~440, my rig is currently pulling 557 khash/s with the CPU mining I’m also doing.
Still gonna try and work the cgminer conf file.
If you want, if i have time tomoz, depending on your time zone… Because your also using a strait 270, I can skype you or something and ill try help you work through it.
Using a BAMT SMOS usb boot is probably the easiest way to go. That worked for me no problems. I can help you set up like ive done mine. I’m really interested in getting people to beat my speeds so I can copy them :D
-
I just converted from win7 to BAMT, so far I like it, especialy remote desktop.
Now need to figure out how to configure 2 gpus :)
(R9 270 + 7790)So far I modified config file with 7790 setting but it seems R9 picked those setting and is running 63°C 420kH/s now, while 7790 don’t mine at all ???

OK, it is working, hash rates are just as expected, but gpu0 have some problems:

I’m using win7 right now, shall try bamt smos soon, as max i can get now is 440Kh/s per card.
I’m fiddling with two very same gigabyte r9 270 cards (and 2 more coming soon) and i’m curious about power efficiency and cooling at that impressive 960Kh/s
I’m using 600watt psu rated at 82% and it draws (measured from wall)
idle ~120watt
at 2x440Kh/s ( engine 1050, memory 1500 intensity 18) draws 430+ wattsBut there’s the thing, at 949engine and 1400memory vddc can be lowered to 1.163v which gives 2x400Kh/s and power consumption of 370+watt and no overheating w/o risers.

SMOS is “secretely” mining 15minutes a day for developer, taking 1% of your daily mining power.
http://www.smos-linux.org/donate/
To be honest I am ok with this as far as he keep the developement.
What I don’t like is that this information is not obvious when you start with smos…EDIT: be carefull downloading any unofficial smos, % should be much higher!!
I don’t think anyone should be ok with their OS being trojaned with a secret CPU/GPU-cycle-stealing revenue stream by the developer.
You should demand your OS is trojan horse free, and donating should be an opt-in experience, not an opt-out one.
Apparently it’s easy enough to write it out. It is also stated on the site that it mines for that 15min period.
With that said, it should be clarified a lot more right next to the download link. Also it should be easy to remove it, the file is hidden.
To be honest, I didn’t know any of this when I first started using SMOS. When I found out, I posted it in this thread as a comment strait away.

It seems, this “mining” kicks me out of my pool, but then after finished (if) didn’t restore original mining.
Screw this, I will try Ubuntu.Damm, both Ubuntu and Xubuntu wasted so much of my time, ubuntu the shittiest os EVER.
I followed this guide:
http://highoncoins.com/litecoin-rig/how-to-install-ubuntu-and-optimize-cgminer-for-litecoin-mining-rig/
but every step failed.
It seems I am not the only one who cant run this “system”:
