Problem with R9 270 (Gigabyte)
-
There are two 6pin connectors, I plugged in both of them.
-
No, old card doesn’t have separate power connectors (it was cheap). The card is supposed to work with a 500W PS, I have a 550 PS. I may have to break down and try that… or connect it to it’s own ps I’ll have to look for one around.
-
I just bought one of these R9 270, I used HD 6970’s before. For the same price, new, mine has only one 6 pin connector, works of a single power supply (500w) and give 300 KHash/sec no sweat on Linux. Sweet…
1.5 GB Ram
2.4 GHertz Intel Core 2 Duo -
Mine has 2x 6pin connectors.
If I only plug in one (either one) the card is not recognized in the OS, I suspect it isn’t getting enough power with one connected.
If I leave those disconnected, it will boot, but that’s probably because it’s not active/powered.
Still messing with it, i’ve read I may have to flash the BIOS, but it’s already at the latest version. So I’m still looking for other options.
-
OK, flashing the bios was what was needed. Now all I need now is to configure it.
-
Oh wow. Congrats. I never had to flash my bios.
You seemingly have the same card as me. I’ll link you my tweaking thread if you want to try out my cgminer.conf
Just keep an eye on your heat. I’ve pushed this thing as far as I’m willing to go. Not sure how long the Gigabyte 270 will last like this but yeah, good luck!

Thanks I kind of have been following your thread, and got the r9 270 at your suggestion in the chat room a couple weeks ago.
I have been using guiminer and have it running on that till I can figure out how to configure the command line cgminer. I also need to make sure the settings are correct for the card, but I don’t think Catalyst likes the fact that I don’t have a monitor plugged into the card, and therefore doesn’t allow me to change settings. I’ve been accessing the system remotely, but I’ll have to switch the monitor to the new card when I get home, so I can tweak it in Catalyst.
I do have a question… how are you monitoring gpu temps? In catalyst?
I saw that someone posted a new tool to help monitor, if it makes sense I’ll look at that.
BTW, thanks for sharing the info about tweaking your r9 270, it’s been helpful.
Now, All I have to do is sneak another order for another video card. :P

I’m using BAMT SMOS - http://www.smos-linux.org/index/ - It has temp and hashrate monitering built into its desktop background. Pretty neat if I might add.
It’s an active project and you auto donate to them by allowing 15mins of mining at 3pm local time on their behalf. I think it mine’s ltc for them. Small price to pay considering it just simply worked for me without any dicking around with drivers.
If you do go the bamt smos route. you need to navigate to etc/bamt/ and in there you will find the configs for cgminer and bamt it self.
-
Probably the issue is your PSU, it can’t throw much power…
I thought this might be contributing to my issue. But I don’t have anyway of proving it other than buying a new PS. That is on the list of things to buy, but maybe not as soon as I’d like.
I think your PSU is fine to be honest. If your just running one card, 550watts should be fine. (don’t quote me)

Catalyst likes the fact that I don’t have a monitor plugged into the card, and therefore doesn’t allow me to change settings.
Use a dummy plug. Theyre pretty easy to put together I’ve read. I’m just hooking in my hdmi into the other hdmi in on my pc. Did you have a hdmi in on your pc? is it close enough to run a cable?

OK, here’s an update:
Hard drive bit the big one. Luckily I have a few spare hard drives laying around. Rebuilt the o/s and had activation issues (even though I own the license). Had to rebuild the O/S again. Got it running.
Finally messed around with cgminer’s config file. Had a hell of a time until I removed the old video card and just left the R9 270. After that, it was easy.
I’m not real sure how to read the stats in cgminer, but I could not use a concurrency of 16000, it gave lots of issues, so now I’m at concurrency of 7040. Gonna leave that there for a while to make sure it’s stable. Otherwise, I’m using most, if not all of Calem’s settings.
On the other hand, I downloaded the BAMT SMOS, loaded it on a thumb drive and can boot to it. But there is a learning curve for me Linux and I was having problems with it recognizing my network card that I didn’t want to put a bunch of time in it… so easier to just bring windows back up.
-
Here is my cgminer ouput. Now all I need to do is figure out what it means.

Good luck with it all.
If you need a hand inside SMOS, let me know. I can either set up an nVidia in guiminer-scrypt for proxy in windows 7/8 or I can do cgminer in BAMT SMOS.
I can’t really offer advice unless someone is replicating my setup. I only all ready know, what I’ve all ready done. Sorry I can’t be of any more help.
