\[HOW TO\] get people to think about money
-
And not in an “it would be nice to win the lottery†kind of way.
There are obstacles when talking crypto to the masses. And there’s a lot to talk about!
But that doesn’t matter if nobody cares.
Why should they? They seem pretty happy with what they hold as value and call money. This exercise is essentially what Mike Maloney is saying in his videos: The Biggest Scam In The History Of Mankind - Hidden Secrets of Money Ep 4 - Mike Maloney
Only tackled from a different angle, from the other end of the scale if you like. Without anything complicated, or even mentioning anything about crypto.
The goal is simply to question money.
I haven’t done this on enough people, but even my 10 year old nephew seemed to walk away from it with some questions about money. It would be great to see how others respond. You don’t have to present it exactly I like I do, just trying to paint a picture here:
* You can do this at home or at work, anywhere. Ask if somebody wants to take part in a little experiment or quick test.
Ask them if they have some cash. Hopefully they do, ask politely if you can have a closer look at one of the dollar bills, preferably the largest one.* After you inspect this $100, hold it up for a few seconds. Rip it in two!
The initial reaction and slight shock on people’s faces when you rip up $100 is great.Depending on the crowd you’re rollin with, they might be thinking; Cool, a magic trick! Or, argh, not again with the a magic tricks…
But this is no magic trick, what you’ve done is ruined his/her $100! Since you don’t carry any cash, apologize and express that you’ll replace it the next time you meet. For now though, in return. You grab a piece of paper or post-it, write 100, maybe draw a smiley and hand it over. That post-it is important to you, as it’s also a reminder. So the next time you meet, you can trade them with each other.
* You can continue the day after or the week after. But for now, lets say you just leave the room and come back with $100. Now ask if they have that post-it you wrote, ask them how much that has value to them (this is important). Agree that it’s $100 and trade. Upon receiving the post-it, just rip it up! Now ask how much you ripped up in total.
-
If they answer $100. Ask how can that be? Three seconds ago that post-it was worth $100.
-
If the followup is $200. Again, how can that be? That was just a piece of paper you scribbled on.
There’s no correct answer to a false question.
.
You can further discuss the matter if you like, as it may bring about some. Make a point that you can take the two halves of the $100, go to the bank and get a new one for free. Since it costs to print new dollar bills, who’s paying for it?
(I don’t know all the laws around the world, but having two halves of a dollar bill that is identifiable is more than good enough)Kids are actually surprised by the fact that you can do this. And it makes sense really, they see, or rather are taught that fiat currency is real money. So they relate to it as they would to valuable assets in their life; once it’s ruined it should cease to exist. It may be the simplest and best form of logic towards valuation, yet we don’t question it at all as we grow older.

I like his series. Good post.

Has anybody tried the ripping up thing? I’m curious to know how well it works elsewhere, if it has any effect.
Oh, this is amusing

Hehe, better be on the safe side then.
You could use your own paper. Actually, when I think about it, you could do this over Skype. Where one pretends to send their note through the webcam and the other receives it from the screen. If a third person is viewing, the screen-caps would look as if something is being sent.
