Windows - Driver crash - Tip
-
Hi,
Sometimes when you want to push the limit (undervoltage or over frequency), it can happen the video driver stops responding. In this case, Windows will say something and restores it more or less. But it can happen, the driver is only restore in energy save mode.
In this case, the mining performance are crap. In my case, with my R9 280X it is about 300 kH/s instead of 720 kH/s. Before I found the following trick, I had to reboot my PC and I didn’t like that.
The trick is to really restart the video driver. Go there and download DevCon : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272/en
Extract the package in a folder.
Then open a command console in admin mode, go to the extraction folder and type:
devcon restart =display *It will restart the video driver.
In my case, I also have to stop OC Guru II, relaunch it and reapply my frequency changes.
Then you can mine at full possibility without reboot.

Just curious, does CGMINER’s (G)PU then ®estart do the same thing (or resolve the issue)?
-
When this happens, the stats displayed by cgminer are shit (and the work is interrupted). The value kH/s is frozen (you have to look at the average 5s which is 0 kH/s). In my case, press G then press R => crash of cgminer (when there is a driver crash, in normal situation, it works perfectly).
If I relaunch cgminer without doing my manipulation => depending on how windows restarts the driver, either shitty hasrate or ok.
If I do my manipulation before restarting cgminer => hashrate ok.
