Has Anyone had to use one on their rig should one have one on standby ?

Never had to use one on a rig/computer but after having an electrical fire start in a car once I always have one around. I own about 6, 1 in the house, 1 in the car and the rest in my workshop.
For £30 I think it’s great peace of mind, even if you never have to use it.

i keep one in the room next to the mining rigs.
and all the rooms have central smokedetector system.
ive seen a card catch fire, its not pretty:P -
I did say it has a half joke … but I can see this is no laughing matter.
I will get myself one.
Thanks for replies

Card on fire - Yikes !
[/quote]When my Gigabyte 7970 blew it threw three glowing sparks about two meters. and i do mean glowing sparks that was firehot, and the red glowing from em lasted for seconds, more than enought time to light something.
Also it had 5cm of spikeflame coming out of it until i cut the power. might be it stopped but it flamed for three seconds until i got the power off. -
err - mate that is proper scary !!!
Why do you think this was ?
Over clocking ?
Too much heat ?
The use of cheap components (no offence) ?
It would help to know why you think it happened - ok that might be different then why it did happen - but it’s useful to know your feelings here ?
Or was it just one of those things that can happen ? - in which case - someone would have to be insane to leave a mining rig running overnight at home !!!
On that note - are you a full time miner - or do you have a day job also - in which case - don’t you worry about the house burning down !?

to many questions ;D
1. it happened because the gigabyte 7970 oc card has an weak power phase part, i have blown one, a mate have blown 6 (or more) of em… same region of card every time.
2. I run em in my house, ergo why i have several fire extinquisers, and all the rooms surrounding the mining room has smoke detectors connected to an central system, if they go everyone in the house goes, including my main system with sms warning to several closeby people and main siren. gonna move em soon though
2. People who knows me, knows i do not skimp on components! only top shelf (Seasonic 1250, high end version of cards etc)
3. hehe i do consider me “pro” miner, given the amount of hardware ive been through/the size of my rigs.
4. I do not worry, especially given that im moving my farm to an external place next to the house soon:) -
That answer and the explanation deserves a rep at the very least ! - so here you go - have a rep ! : )
Like - Wow - I never thought safety should be so high on the agenda - it’s always cooling and power - but never safety.
Excellent reminder.
